Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot(RNIP)

This  Rural and Northern immigration Pilot, RNIP program was introduced on January 24, 2019. The program was designed to assist rural communities in Ontario, Western Canada and the Territories.
Select communities that elect to participate in the pilot will work with their local economic development organizations with a need to demonstrate that they meet the eligibility criteria and how immigration will promote economic development in their community.

Community Eligibility Criteria for RNIP

The population of 50,000 or less and be located at least 75km from a core Metropolitan area

OR

Population up to 200,000 and be considered remote from other large cities. Provinces, where communities may be located, include:

  1. Alberta
  2. British Columbia 
  3. Manitoba
  4. Northwest Territories
  5. Nunavut
  6. Ontario
  7. Saskatchewan
  8. Yukon

Process for RNIP

  • Communities are selected to participate in the program.
  • Candidate finds an employer in one of the participating communities.
  • The community must endorse the applicant to support their permanent residence.
  • Applicants will be assessed against the selection criteria and admissibility requirements

Who can apply for RNIP

To be eligible for the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot Program, you must meet all IRCC eligibility required must

  • have qualifying work experience or have graduated from a publicly funded post-secondary institution recommending community.
  • meet or exceed the language requirements
  • meet or exceed the educational requirements
  • prove you have enough money to support your transition into the community
  • intent to live in the community
  • meet community-specific requirements

If you meet all of the requirements, you can start to look for eligible jobs in the community.

Exemption for accumulating work experience over a continuous period

Due to work interruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, you’re now exempt from the requirement to accumulate work experience over a continuous period.

You can now accumulate qualifying work experience of at least 1 year of full-time work (or an equal amount in part-time) within the last 3 years, whether that work experience is continuous or not.

All other requirements for work experience and eligibility criteria must be met.
