4. A multicultural country

Over the past century and a half, Canada has welcomed 15 million immigrants. Canada is also home to over one million aboriginal people, including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities. 7. Internationally recognized degrees

Each year hundreds of thousands of international students attend Canadian colleges and universities. Their degrees are recognized around the world as being equivalent to those obtained from the United States or Commonwealth countries. 10. Nature and four distinct seasons

While Canada has big cities, we also preserve a huge amount of unsettled land and have many national and provincial parks. Because Canada is such a large country and borders three oceans (the Pacific, Atlantic and Arctic), there is significant diversity in landscape from coast to coast and province to province. Canada also has four very distinct seasons and the temperature varies a great deal throughout the year. In the winter, certain cities almost never have snow, while other cities may get a lot. In the summer, temperatures can reach above 30 degrees Celsius. With such diversity, there’s something for everyone, including indoor and outdoor recreational activities at no or little cost.

International students in Canada continue to grow in 2019 FEBRUARY 21, 2020CBIE-BCEIPRESS RELEASE Newly released numbers from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) reveals that as of December 31, 2019, there were 642,480 international students in Canada. This number represents a 13% increase over 2018, a slightly slower rate of growth than in 2018 when international student numbers grew by 16% over the previous year.

“The new data clearly demonstrate the continuing attractiveness of Canada as a study destination,” said Larissa Bezo, President and CEO of CBIE. “Our research shows that international students choose Canada because of the quality of the Canadian education system and our reputation as a safe and tolerant country. This reputation is especially appealing at present given current geopolitical realities, and 96% of international students tell us they would recommend Canada to family and friends.”

The new IRCC data maintain the growth curve noted in CBIE research, with India emerging as the top source country of international students for the second year in a row with 28% growth. For the first time since 2006, China had a decline (0.5%) in the number of students coming to Canada although it remains firmly in second place, with 141, 400 students in 2o19. South Korea remained in third place with 24,180 students, closely followed by France with 24, 045 students.

The total number of post-secondary international students in Canada as of December 31, 2019, was 498, 735, a 14.5 % increase from 2018.

‘This number representing all levels of Canadian education clearly demonstrates the continuing attractiveness of Canada as a study destination,’ said Karen McBride, President and CEO of CBIE. Our research shows that international students choose Canada because of the quality of the Canadian education system and our reputation as a safe and tolerant country. This reputation is especially attractive now, given a changing global climate, and 95% of international students tell us they would recommend Canada to family and friends. Moreover, the strong focus of our member institutions across the country on effectively supporting international students is a hallmark of Canada’s approach, one that we continually strive to improve. ’
